Staying Ahead of the Curve: 5 Strategies for Paralegals to Stay on Top of the Law

Updated: Feb 21, 2024

In the dynamic field of law, staying on top of the ever-evolving legal landscape is crucial for legal professionals, especially paralegals. As the regulatory environment constantly changes, paralegals play a vital role in the access to justice and ensuring that their firms remain compliant and effective. In this blog post, we'll explore five effective strategies that legal professionals, particularly paralegals, can employ to stay abreast of changes in the law.

1.

Continuous Legal Education (CLE)

One of the fundamental ways paralegals stay ahead of legal changes is by engaging in continuous legal education. This involves attending workshops, webinars, and seminars that focus on the latest legal developments. Do your research! Look for paralegal associations in the province of Ontario that offer updates and education. Keep in mind that as a legal professional, one of the benefits of being licensed by the law Law Society of Ontario is that we receive Ontario Reports with the most updated cases that have been added to the law reports. Utilize this benefit as this may assist with a case you may be working on.

2.

Subscribing to Legal Publications and Journals

Legal publications and journals are invaluable resources for paralegals aiming to stay informed about changes in the law. Subscribing to reputable legal publications, both online and print, provides access to articles, case analysis, and commentaries authored by legal experts. Regularly reading these materials allows paralegals to gain insights into recent court decisions, legislative changes, and emerging legal issues.

3.

Participating in Professional Associations and Networks

Being an active member of professional associations and networks is essential for paralegals seeking to stay connected with peers and industry experts. Joining organizations such as the OPA (Ontario Paralegal Association) and the OABP (Ontario Association of Black Paralegals) or local paralegal associations or committees provides opportunities for networking, attending events, and participating in discussions on legal developments. Collaborating with fellow professionals can lead to valuable knowledge-sharing and insights into best practices.

4.

Utilizing Legal Technology and Research Tools

In the digital age, paralegals have access to a myriad of legal technology tools and research platforms that facilitate efficient information gathering. Platforms like Westlaw, LexisNexis, and legal research databases empower paralegals to stay updated on case law, statutes, and regulations. Familiarity with these tools enhances the speed and accuracy of legal research, ensuring that paralegals can quickly adapt to changes in the law.

TIP: I personally use Lexis Nexis premium for practitioners to keep me up to date with all of the new laws and for my legal research.

5.

Building Relationships with Legal Experts

Establishing strong relationships with legal experts, including lawyers and subject matter specialists, is a proactive way for paralegals to stay informed about legal changes. Regularly communicating with professionals in the field allows paralegals to seek guidance, discuss evolving legal issues, and gain practical insights. These relationships can prove invaluable in navigating complex legal matters and staying ahead of regulatory changes.

Staying on top of changes in the law is a continuous and essential aspect of a paralegal's role as an advocate. By embracing a combination of continuous education, engagement with legal publications, participation in professional associations, utilization of legal technology, and building relationships with legal experts, paralegals can navigate the evolving legal landscape successfully. These strategies not only contribute to professional development but also enhance the overall effectiveness of legal teams in adapting to and thriving in the ever-changing legal environment.
